Amazing Things I Found This February

Greetings from wherever you are. Here in Nairobi, I just finished 2 6-game sets of a tennis and I thought I would share some worthwhile things I stumbled upon over the course of the past few weeks as I catch my breath. As a recreational tennis player myself, there is nothing better than watching the matches up close. I don't make much of a cheering squad for my sister-in-law as she plays, except for the occasional gasp, but I enjoy seating on the south side of the court with the sun on my back and watching her play.

Most of the things I tried this month were about cheering myself up, with a few frivolous things peppered in here and there.

Without further ado, the things I tried and loved in February were….

  1. I stumbled upon this website named PimEyes and it stopped me in my tracks. Similar to Google's reverse face search, PimEyes uses images and face recognition to search for similar faces on over 10 million websites. It uses different modern technologies, like facial recognition, artificial intelligence, and reverse image search to help you find your photos on the Internet. You have to try it.

  2. A deeply relatable and triggering book by Alice Miller entitled, “The Drama of The Gifted Child”. In it, the author explores a penetrating look at how to break the cycle of child abuse in today’s world.Miller is both prolific and eloquent in her continuing indictment of parents who abuse their children and societies that tolerate such behavior. It's a must read for firstborn daughters that grew up in a dysfunctional home. After, you can also read her other books...'"The Drama of the Gifted Child: The Search for the True Self", "For Your Own Good: The Roots of Violence in Child-rearing", "Thou Shalt Not Be Aware: Society’s Betrayal of the Child", "Pictures of a Childhood: Sixty-six Watercolors and an Essay", "The Untouched Key: Tracing Childhood Trauma in Creativity and Destructiveness", "Banished Knowledge: Facing Childhood Injuries", "Paths of Life: Six Case Histories", "The Truth Will Set You Free: Overcoming Emotional Blindness and Finding Your True Adult Self", "The Body Never Lies: The Lingering Effects of Cruel Parenting".

  3. Sometimes you need something relatable crack you up. And that is oh!stephco She is a current favorite. Her dating escapades are so entertaining and I ma always looking forward to a new post. I first came across her channel through her video on 'pretty privilage' but I subscribed for her storytelling and social commentary.

  4. The show I am currently obsessed with is 'Truth Be Told(2019)' created by Nichelle Tramble Spellman. If you love a crime mystery with lots of twists and turns....this is it. And the fact that it stars a black woman, is the icing on an already delicious cake. I am also watching 'Poker Face(2023)'. It's another crime-mystery television series created by Rian Johnson. I am on episode 6 and completely immersed and obsessed. Every episode offers a new adventure, just like I like ti. I would also love to recommend some great Asian dramas. The first is The Forbidden Marriage (2022); I will watch any historical drama where the king falls in love with his servant/maid love. Others are Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist (2022), Alchemy of Souls (2022) and KinnPorsche (2022).

  5. My favorite Tiktok creators these days are @zethugqola, @specsandblazers, @ and @jolly_goood_ginger for the tea. You will see why.

  6. My husband has never seen me laugh harder than when I watched a black lady sketch show. Maybe you can relate.

  7. Jeremiah 17:14 Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; Save me and I will be saved, For You are my praise.

  8. The local small business I want to put you on to this month is the Kilimani Project Foundation. If you are looking for a place to recycle your waste, this is it. Pack up all your glass bottles, plastics or fabric waste every third Saturday of the month along Kilimani.

  9. Another way to recycle materials while making money and social and achieving environmental impact. Dial *483*89# to register and earn redeemable points per kg of waste. So far they have two stations; Total Ngong Road and Total Gigiri, Kenya.

  10. Another cool website is Canva It is one of the best design and video editing tools in the market right now and it's recent updates have made it even better. I have used it to design my journals and create content for my brand.

  11. If you love to take pictures and are always looking for photography tutorials, check out @camera-bro on Tiktok. He is a photographer that demonstrates all kinds of phone photograghy ideas to take your social media to a new level.

  12. The internet archive. It's an archive for the internet itself that begun in 1996. Today, the archive contains: 588 billion web pages, 28 million books and texts, 14 million audio recordings (including 220,000 live concerts), 6 million videos (including 2 million Television News programs), 3.5 million images and 580,000 software programs. They offer virtual library cards, so you can upload items, borrow a book, write reviews of items on the Archive and post questions and messages.

  13. The show Poldark made me happy in so many ways. It's an epic romance novel come to life. This historical drama is about Ross Poldark who returns from the American Revolutionary War to find his father dead, his estate in ruins and his lover engaged to another man. Slowly but steadily, he attempts to rebuild his life. 10/10, a must watch.

  14. Do me a favor and read this deeply relatable and triggering book titled '101 Essays that will Change the way You Think' by Brianna Wiest. This self-help book from a young author has attracted the attention of millions on TikTok and for good reason. It is my current read.

  15. My husband has never seen me laugh harder than when I watched Lilly Singh . Maybe you can relate.

  16. I stumbled upon this website named Z-library and it stopped me in my tracks. If you want to read and download all genres of best sellers, this is for you. I recently downloaded 'Big Magic: creative living beyond fear' by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of 'EAT PRAY LOVE', 'Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office' by Lois P. Frankel, Ph.D, 'You are a Badass: How to stop doubting your greatness and start living an awesome life' by Jen Sincero, 'The Long Walk to Freedom' by Nelson Mandela and 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck' by Mark Manson.

  17. Another cool website is Speedwrite. It is the coolest life hack your teacher doesn't want you to find out about. It generates new, unique writing, from any source text to prevent plagiarism. And it free!

  18. I stumbled upon this website named Book of Anonymous Letters and it stopped me in my tracks. The site is an online platform for people to submit and read letters anonymously. You have to try it because everyone has a letter to write. Whether you need closure, a safe space to confess or a means to let go of your past. I gave it a go myself and the experience was therapeutic.

  19. Another cool website is Unscreen where you can remove the background of any video. A cool trick to have under your sleeve.

  20. The show I am currently binge watching is Atlanta, a comedy-drama television series created by Donald Glover. I am on season two and completely immersed. Another show to really crack you up is Year of the rabbit.

  21. If you love to take pictures and are always looking for photography tutorials, check out @camera-bro on Tiktok. He is a photographer that demonstrates all kinds of phone photography ideas to take your social media to a new level.

  22. As I mentioned in a previous post, the pandemic completely altered the way I observe the Sabbath day. I used to got to church from 9am then hung out with my friends in the evenings but now I worship at home with a small group of believers all Saturday. Because of this, I have had the pleasure of being a guest at the homes of so many good hostesses, and it was on such an occasion when I stumbled on the best recipe for brown chapati. Check it out here and try it out. You will thank me later.

I hope you find them insightful.
